Charles worked for over eight years as a Senior Prosecutor for the Director of Public Prosecutions in South Australia (DPP).

He prosecuted numerous serious crimes in South Australia including drug offences, robbery offences, sex offending, child pornography, fraud and dishonesty offences, serious assaults, serious driving offences (cause death by dangerous driving), attempted murder and murder.

​

Charles has significant experience appearing in all jurisdictions including the Youth Court, Magistrates’ Court, District Court, Supreme Court and the South Australian Court of Criminal Appeal.

​

Charles has been junior counsel in jury trials including attempted rape and attempted murder. He has also appeared in mental competence hearings and as counsel in numerous Supreme Court bail hearings.

​

Having worked at the DPP Charles has an intimate knowledge and understanding of the workings of the South Australian criminal justice system. He was known to be an efficient and fair prosecutor maintaining an excellent rapport with defence counsel.

Charles has worked closely with numerous external agencies including South Australian Police (Major Crime Investigation Branch, Intelligence Branch, Drug and Organised Crime Branch, Crime Scene Investigators, Firearms Branch, Criminal Investigation Branch) and the Forensic Science Centre.

Prior to joining the DPP Charles practised in a law firm for over five years primarily in the areas of criminal defence, road traffic law, personal injury, medical negligence, victims of crime compensation, wills & estates and family law.

​

During that time, Charles had conduct of numerous large personal injury claims including resolving matters with compensation payments to clients exceeding one million dollars.

 

Having also completed a Biomedical degree, Charles would be one of the few lawyers in South Australia with such dual qualifications that puts him at an added advantage when it comes to handling medical negligence and personal injury matters.
